Hiring a Paver Contractor in Melbourne, FL: 8 Questions to Ask

Pavers last for decades when they're built right. When they're not, you find out a year or two later when the driveway starts to sink. The difference almost always comes down to who you hire. Here are the questions we'd ask if we were in your shoes.

1. How deep is the base, and what is it made of?

This is the most important question. Pavers sit on a dug out, compacted base. Melbourne soil is sandy, so a thin base or pavers laid on loose fill will move. A good contractor can tell you how deep they dig, what base material they use and how they compact it.

2. Who pulls the permit?

In Brevard, each city has its own building department, and unincorporated areas go through the county. Driveway aprons often sit in public right of way with extra rules. Your contractor should know which office covers your address and handle it. Our Brevard permit guide explains how it works.

3. Are you insured?

Ask for proof of insurance. A crew working on your property with heavy equipment should be covered.

4. Will you help with HOA approval?

If you're in Viera, Suntree or another HOA community, design approval usually comes first. Ask if they'll provide product specs and a drawn layout for your application.

5. What's in the written scope?

Get the paver product, color, pattern, square footage, demo, base prep, edge restraints, drainage work and cleanup in writing. Vague quotes lead to surprise changes later.

6. What does the warranty cover?

Ask what's covered, for how long, and what you need to do to keep it valid. Get it in writing.

7. Who will be on site?

Ask who runs the job day to day and how you reach them. Good communication shows up in reviews. One Melbourne customer wrote about our team: "Paul came out and we talked about where I wanted the pavers installed! He was most helpful, professional and followed up on all the details!"

8. Will you leave extra pavers?

Paver colors change between production runs. A few spare pavers from your job make future repairs match, especially for driveway aprons the city might dig up.

Red Flags

  • A price given over the phone without seeing the site
  • "You don't need a permit" for a driveway that reaches the road
  • No mention of base depth or edge restraints
  • Pressure to sign the same day
