Hurricane Season Paver Checklist for Brevard Homeowners
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. On the Space Coast, that means several months of watching the tropics and a few weekends of storm prep most years. Your pavers handle storms better than most surfaces, but a little prep and a quick check afterward go a long way.
Why Pavers Handle Storms Well
Pavers are individual units locked together with sand and edge restraints. They flex a little instead of cracking like a slab. If one section gets damaged, it can be lifted and reset with the same pavers. That's a big reason pavers are so common in Brevard.
Before the Storm
- Clear patio furniture, planters and grills off pool decks and patios. Wind turns them into hammers.
- Clean out drains, channel drains and the edges of permeable pavers so water can get away.
- Look for low joints. Wind driven rain can wash out sand from joints that are already low.
- Don't drain your pool all the way. Talk to your pool pro about the right level for a storm.
After the Storm
Once it's safe to walk outside, take a slow lap around your hard surfaces:
- Check for sunken spots, especially near downspouts, pool edges and the driveway apron
- Look for washed out joint sand
- Check edges where pavers meet grass or beds. Lost edge support leads to spreading.
- Look for standing water that doesn't drain within a day
- Note any pavers lifted by debris or uprooted trees
Take photos of anything that looks off. If you're filing an insurance claim, photos taken right after the storm help.
Small Fixes vs. Real Repairs
Refilling joint sand is a simple fix. Sinking, spreading or a section that rocks underfoot means water got into the base. That needs the pavers lifted, the base fixed and the pavers reset. Ignoring it usually makes it bigger. Our sinking pavers guide explains what's going on underneath.
Plan Big Projects Around the Season
If you're planning a new pool deck or driveway, the dry season from late October through May is the easiest time to build. Read our post on the best time to install pavers in Brevard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a hurricane lift pavers?
Properly installed pavers rarely lift from wind alone. Damage usually comes from flooding, washouts, fallen trees or debris.
Should I seal pavers before hurricane season?
Sealing helps lock joint sand, which can reduce washout. Seal during a dry stretch, ideally in spring.
Who fixes storm damaged pavers?
A paver contractor can lift and reset the damaged area using your existing pavers when they're still in good shape.
