Pool Deck Pavers on Merritt Island: Materials, Heat and Salt
On Merritt Island, the pool is where summer happens. Between the Indian River on the west and the Banana River on the east, island homes deal with heat, humidity and a lot of salt pools. The right pool deck makes the difference between a deck you love and one you tiptoe across.
Start With Heat
Bare feet are the real test. Light colored natural stone like travertine and marble is popular here because it stays more comfortable in the sun than many darker surfaces. Light concrete pavers are a solid choice too. Dark colors look great in photos but get hot by early afternoon in a Brevard July.
Salt Pools Are the Norm
Many island pools run on salt systems. Salt water splashing onto a deck can wear down unsealed surfaces and leave a white film. That doesn't rule anything out. It just means:
- Seal the deck and keep it on a schedule
- Rinse the splash zone with fresh water now and then
- Ask whether the stone or paver you like is a good fit for salt pools
Resurfacing an Old Concrete Deck
A lot of Merritt Island homes have older concrete or stamped decks. In many cases, pavers can go right over the old deck if it's sound and the heights work at the pool coping, doors and drains. One of our customers put it simply in a Google review: "They covered our existing stamped face pool deck with pavers. They also extended our pool deck and built a wall with columns and stairs into the yard." Going over the old deck avoids tearing it out, but it only works when the slab underneath is solid.
Watch the Edges
The pool coping, screen enclosure footers and doors set your finished heights. Before you pick a material, make sure your installer has measured all of them. A deck that sits too high at the slider is a common mistake.
Drainage Around the Pool
Island lots get heavy summer rain. Your deck should slope away from the pool and the house, and any deck drains need to stay clear. If the area floods after storms, talk about drainage before you pick a paver.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is travertine slippery when wet?
Tumbled travertine has a textured surface that's popular around pools for grip. Ask to see the finish wet before you choose.
Can you add pavers to my screen enclosure area?
Usually, yes. We plan around enclosure footers and door heights during the site visit.
How long does a pool deck take?
It depends on size, demo and site prep. Most residential decks take a few days once work starts.
